Job Alert – Ghent | Belgium

The Department of Geology of Ghent University is seeking to appoint a tenure-track research-professor in the field of ‘Co-evolution of planet, oceans, climate and life’ to start on 1st of February 2025. We are inviting all interested researchers to apply within the next month (deadline 3/11/24).

The successful candidate will be expected develop a research program exploring paleoclimate / paleo-environmental proxies based on fossil material. They will be expected to have proven expertise in the collection, analyses and interpretation of paleoclimatologic data extracted from the micro- or macrofossil archive. We emphasize that we are looking for a colleague knowledgeable in, and capable of combining both paleontology and ((bio)geochemical) proxy data analysis. There is no predefined focus on geological time periods, particular proxies or fossil groups, though we are not seeking to duplicate expertise already existing within the department. While collaboration with climate modelers is certainly possible, this is not a modeling position.

The candidate will have the possibility to establish and lead an independent research group within the department, responsible for defining the exact research direction, mentoring graduate students, and seeking external research funding to support the group’s activities. Core-facilities available at the university and the departmental infrastructure can of course be used to expand scientific research.

Our new colleague will be joining the department at an interesting time, as it is currently reorganizing its teaching curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the educational programme in the Bachelor and Master in Geology, respectively featuring modules in basic and advanced geology; given the current revision of the program, there will be some flexibility as to the content of modules expected to taught, especially with regards to the MSc.

The mandate is awarded for a term of five years. Upon favorable evaluation at the end of this period, the position will be converted into a permanent appointment at Associate Professor level.
