The criteria are established by the judging committee and should include neatness and attractiveness of the poster including its graphics; scientific merit of the research problem; clarity and innovativeness of the research methods; clarity and simplicity of the results. Awardee may be a student, or if the awardee has formally completed a graduate degree, cannot have been employed more than 6 months before the award is made. L.R. WILSON BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD(Awarded items include a commemorative certificate, $500 check, two years paid membership in AASP)(To be awarded by the Awards Committee) Named for Leonard R. Wilson, University of Oklahoma, a pioneer in the field of palynology. He published over 200 scientific papers effectively demonstrating the relationships of plants to sediments and rocks through time. He actively advanced the idea that plant microfossils could become a powerful biostratigraphic tool. Wilson was the first man to perceive the common uses of palynology in oil exploration and served as a consultant to 17 major and independent oil companies during his career. Judged by an ad hoc committee formed by the AASP Awards Committed at the time of the annual meeting. Conditions of the award include: (1) The awardee should be registered in a graduate degree program, or if the speaker has formally completed a graduate degree, cannot have been employed more than 6 months prior to the annual meeting. (2) The paper must represent research carried out in pursuit of the graduate degree. (3) The paper must be authored only by the student and the author must present it. The judging procedures are established by the judging committee and usually should include audibility, clarity, speed, poise and appearance of the speaker; clear statement of the problem, methods and conclusions of the research; quality of the illustrations. STUDENT TRAVEL AWARDS(At the descretion of the AASP Board of Directors, awards supporting travel to meetings are awarded competitively and judged by the AASP Awards Committee. The conditions and amounts vary.)Below is an example of an announcement, from the 2010 43rd annual AASP Meeting. HALIFAX STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS We are pleased to announce that AASP will award grants to support student travel to the AASP Annual Meeting in Halifax. Procedures for Travel Grant Application: Amount of travel award is variable based on need. We anticipate giving out 2 grants of approximately US$500 each. Applicants are required to prepare: 1) A one paragraph justification for the request plus the abstract submitted for the presentation. 2) A simple budget outlining the requested amount and how the funds would be used. We suggest that the AASP award be used to offset the cost of airfare to the meeting. 3) Applicant's email address. The applicant's advisor should send these items with a brief explanation of how attendance at the annual meeting will benefit the student. Travel Grant Applications are due on September 1, 2010. Travel Grant Applications should be submitted to the chair of the awards committee who will make recommendations after consultation with the committee.
